BANZAid (Baptist Aotearoa New Zealand Aid)

BANZAid is the international aid and development arm of tranzsend.

Vision Statement
A world without poverty and oppression, in which all people and communities experience sustainable livelihoods and well-being, empowered to care for each other and the earth, encouraging peaceful and just relationships.

Mission Statement
As followers of Jesus, BANZAid works to restore life and transform communities, by partnering with the poor and marginalised to alleviate poverty, facilitate sustainable development, capacity build local development initiatives and advocate for peace and justice.

Key Purpose
BANZAid works to restore life of the world's poor by

• supporting and funding aid and development partners in developing countries, while
• creating awareness in New Zealand people about aid and development issues, motivating them to share their lives and resources.

1. Holistic development - as followers of Jesus we are concerned with all of life as an expression of our faith.
2. Poverty alleviation - seeking sustainable individual and community change, enlarging people’s choices and maximising opportunities for the poor to realise their potential.
3. Caring for all people - irrespective of ethnicity, gender or religion, but with a preferential bias towards the poor and powerless, especially women and children.
4. Addressing structural causes of poverty - encouraging and equipping the poor to analyse causes of their poverty and to seek solutions; while working to reduce injustice, inequality and exploitation through advocacy, good development practice and support of national and international campaigns.
5. Participation - assisting local project participants to gain more control over situations affecting their lives, and ensuring involvement in all stages of project planning, implementation and evaluation.
6. Partnership - involving mutually beneficial relationships encouraging shared decision-making between support partners, implementation partners and local project participants, resulting in learning for all stakeholders.
7. Capacity building - with local implementation partners and their communities through a range of partnering activities including: envisioning, empowering, encouraging, mentoring, training, resourcing and technical support. This also involves equipping leaders - to lead, motivate and empower their communities, encouraging accountable, transparent and servant style leadership.
8. Sustainable development - in social, economic and environmental ways, utilising locally appropriate methods, leading to long lasting positive benefits for the poor. This includes ecological sustainability - promoting earth-friendly development, preserving, restoring and improving the natural environment.
9. Best development practice - including efficiency, effectiveness, accountability, transparency and integrity, ensuring practice informs theory, in turn informing practice (action/reflection).
10. Cultural sensitivity - learning about and being sensitive to local participant social, cultural and spiritual contexts, however, not ignoring or promoting

Mandate
In New Zealand

1. Promote, publicise and foster altruistic aid and development to assist the world’s poor.
2. Conscientise and educate constituents about aid and development related issues.
3. Advocate for poverty eradication, seeking just and equal opportunities for the world’s poor.
4. Raise aid and development funds, using them accountably as intended.
5. Encourage local, national and international relationships and partnerships through communication and participation between donors and recipient communities.
6. Maintain the dignity of aid and development recipient partners and their communities.
7. Uphold the Treaty of Waitangi principles and its underlying concepts of partnership and participation.
8. Adhere to accepted best practice standards for international development programmes
9. Concentrate on the geographic area where BANZAid has historical experience and cultural familiarity - Asia, South Asia, South East Asia and Oceania.

Overseas

1. Capacity build local development implementation partners and the communities they serve in ways consistent with the BANZAid core values.
2. Facilitate opportunities for New Zealanders to partner and work in development related activities in developing countries.

Ownership and Governance
BANZAid is the aid and development arm of tranzsend, which is the overseas mission organisation of the Baptist Churches of New Zealand. BANZAid development related activities are operated separately from tranzsend mission related activities.
